The Return.

BY Julian Williams — 11/18/2008

Ok, things have certainly gotten out of hand.  I need to make this blog something memorable.  It must become something.  Especially since I can’t have one in a little bit after I relinquish my role as Music Editor for Imprint Magazine.  What to do? What to do?  I have no idea….I’m not a plan type of person and I tried to come at this blog with a plan…it didn’t work…thus, doing things the old fashioned way doesn’t seem to work.  Sooooooooooo….I’m going to do it my way.

3 Bands You Should Be Listening To:

Does It Offend You, Yeah?

Weird.  Strange.  Upbeat. English.  There is no way to define this band any further.

I just recently cut a review for the new Squarepusher album, “Just a Souvenir” and I can honestly say it’s one of the most varied and eclectic albums I’ve ever heard.  Look for traditional jazz, downtempo, punk, post rock, and drum and bass.

McCoy Tyner

McCoy Tyner’s new album, “Guitars” feature legends/legends-in–the-making John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Derek Trucks, and Bela Fleck amongst others.  Tyner’s smooth, old school jazz feel layered over slick guitar makes this a must listen for a next week.

More stuff soon.  Promise.

El Pueblo Unido

BY Julian Williams — 10/07/2008

I have so much music these days and no time to listen to it. It was becoming quite upsetting until this past weekend, when I found the inspiration to listen to a lot of the music I have but never get to. Inspiration is code for "there was nothing else to do on Saturday."

Also, I don't know why the post is called El Pueblo Unido...and why should I?

Here's some top picks:

The Felice BrothersThe Felice Brothers

The Felice Brothers - "The Felice Brothers" (2008)

The Felice Brothers self-titled debut album is one of the most original records to come out in 2008. Reminisicent of old 70s rock group, The Band, The Felice Brothers breathe new life into a genre of folk rock that, frankly, just isn't being touched in recent years.

Emily KingEmily King

Emily King - "East Side Story"(2007)

Emily King's debut album "East Side Story" is fun exploration of an up-and-coming premiere jazz, soul, and R&B singer/songwriter. King's powerful voice and catch soul hooks makes "East Side Story" one of the most pleasant albums I heard throughout the course of my day. It's also currently in my car and will remain there until something can honestly top it.

TV On the Radio - "Dear Science," (2008)

TV On the Radio's most recent album, "Dear Science," is venture into the weird and experimental sound that the band loves to do. While they are not the most cohesive of bands (as in the songs never seem to properly follow each other on the album), they are one of the most innovative bands that I've heard in a long time. "Dear Science" is a prototype for what music can be these days.

Thievery Corporation - "Radio Retaliation" (2008)

TC's latest album was the only album I gave two listen to, back-to-back, just so I could fully observe the madness behind the production duo's sound. IT has no real genre or real area of expertise. That's probably the best way I could describe it. And good. It is infinitely good. Give a listen if you can.

Either way, I'm going to try and listen to a few new albums every night from now on, no matter what I have to do or am doing. Check these albums out if you can. Buy them, or steal them or, God forbid, illegally download them. They might be worth your time.
