Finals are Quickly Approaching

Like it or not, the academic year is ending. While this brings warm weather and summer vacation, it also brings internship applications, summer jobs, and of course, finals. Finals might be the worst part of any semester, but with the following study tips, you’ll survive finals and enter your summer break worry-free.

Tip #1: Shut off the computer

As nice as it is to stream your favorite TV shows while you’re studying, it’s not effective. Turn off your computer and any other electronics that might distract you so you can focus.

Tip #2: Go to office hours

They exist for a reason! Your professors and TAs have set aside time for you to go and ask questions about class material, so why wouldn’t you go? Talking in person is so much better than shooting somebody an e-mail, and getting to know your professor is a definite must for students.

Tip #3: Know your style

Everybody has a different style when it comes to studying. What works for your roommate may not work best for you, so figure out the best way that you can learn material. It can involve rewriting your notes, making note cards, turning class material into poems… whatever you want!

Tip #4: Space out your studying

The average student takes about five classes a semester. Instead of studying for each class on a different day, study a little bit for each class every day. That way, you’ll constantly be reviewing material and building on what you know. Plus, you’ll be less likely to forget the material you’ve learned.

Tip #5: Move around

You might have your go-to study spot, but according to the New York Times, alternating your study locations is a proven way to boost your knowledge intake. And since when has that ever been a bad thing?

Tip #6: Review, review, review

Just because you read something over once doesn’t mean you know the material. As the test grows closer, review your class material to make sure that it’s ingrained in your memory. If you’re worried about over-reviewing, take a break and work on material for a different class.

Tip #7: Sleep!

I know what you’re thinking: you simply don’t have the time. Finals might be stressful, but you need to put yourself and your mental health first. Even a little bit of sleep is better than no sleep.

Good luck!
