Crossing Over: Celebrities Take On Fashion Industry

What happened to the days of an actress being known for only her acting? Many celebrities are now not only just sticking to one craft but also expanding their horizons. Some transition into music, or musicians starting to acting, but for many it’s into the fashion world. Now more then ever, stars like Beyoncé, Sienna Miller and the Olsen twins are crossing into the world of fashion with their own clothing lines. However, we must ask ourselves: if we saved up enough money, are their clothing lines even worth space in our closets? After New York and London host their annual fashion weeks, along came the presentation of new celebrity made fashion lines.

First on the chopping block: Sienna Miller, who made the line Twenty8Twelve. The line is a large collection made mostly of loose mix and match seperates. However, it doesn’t seem like the type of clothing people will be pining over to get all the sold out pieces. Amongst some great floral skirts, the line features a large selection of shorts that are not appropriate for going out in public in. They are so short the pockets stick out from underneath and that doesn’t seem like it’s worth buying for such a little amount of fabric (the prices are not shown with the clothes online). Even though I have not seen a movie with Sienna Miller in it, I assume she is better at acting then designing a unique line.

Beyoncé on the other hand, who has had her clothing line out longer then Miller, has a full line of jewelry, handbags, everyday clothes and evening gowns. The style is very hip-hop chic and is based off the hip-hop runways mixed with street wear. Besides the label being obviously visible on every piece of clothing, it is a great collection if consumers like that style. A great aspect of the line are the jeans that are made for every body type, especially women with curvy figures, since Beyoncé is known for her beautiful curves. So, if urban chic clothing is for you, then House of Dereon is full of great purchases that are reasonably priced.

Whenever I hear the names Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, all I think about is Full House, but apparently they have been working since then. They have made big names in the fashion industry for quite some time now and have made a recent splash with their new line, The Row. When the Olsen twins are seen in public, they are often criticized for their fashion decisions, mostly for wearing extremely baggy clothes that are considered over the top by the general public. I personally think that even the “high fashion” people would find their clothing line over the top and uninteresting. It is the color palette of white and black and there are just different versions of baggy and tight clothing. Their spring line is a line of separate pieces that seem like basic parts of a women’s wardrobe, but that’s the point, their clothes are simple and not unique. My verdict: not worth it.

There are a handful of other celebrities who crossed over into the designing world but these four women have recently debuted their lines at fashion week or to the general public on their websites. Sienna Miller’s line is great if the consumer is willing to take the outfits apart and make them special in their own way, Beyoncé makes great urban inspired clothes for every women’s body, and the Olsen girls’ line is for a simple woman with big pockets. Just because the clothing lines have celebrities names on them doesn’t mean they will automatically impress and sell, but that won’t stop a celebrities attempt to find another way to make money.
