Grammy By Grammy
Apologies, readers. I'm a little late on the Grammy blog post. The beginning of any semester, as you all well know, is strange and takes some getting used to. But better late than never, right?
As you all also well know, the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards aired last Sunday, January 21 at 8 p.m. on CBS. It was a night, much like this year in music, of spectacle, special effects and daring divas.
Speaking of divas, Beyoncé was the night's big winner. She took home six Grammys, including Song of the Year for "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" (and "best video OF ALL TIME" according to Kanye West) and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Halo."
I was glad to see Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat's "Lucky" win Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. It's an adorable and beautiful song, and is sure to melt the hearts of even the iciest of cynics.
I was also excited for Lady Gaga, and her near-sweep of Grammys in the Pop/Dance category, because regardless of the blood make-up and weird hair sculptures, she's a true original who revolutionized 2009's dance music scene. And quite honeslty, as long as the ridiculous uncle and nephew duo LMFAO didn't win, I was happy.
My personal award for best performance of the night goes to Elton John and Gaga. It was a fabulous pairing because he's the unidisputed originator of flashy on-stage spectacle, and she's carrying on his legacy in this new millennium. And who knew, Lady Gaga can sing!
After watching Grammy Awards #52, I'm only left wondering: what will they come up with next?
