For some reason, I keep coming back...
I honestly have no idea why I watch "Glee" anymore. Well, I do kind of (we'll get to that) but I don't think there is a show that annoys me more that I voluntarily sit down to watch. Last night's post-Super Bowl episode — the show's first in 2011 — reminded me of that fact. In the episode, Coach Beiste and Mr. Schuester tried to bring together the football team and the Glee Club by planning an elaborate halftime show for a big game as Sue had made sure the game conflicted with a Cheerios' competition elsewhere — a competition where Sue wanted to shoot Brittany out of a human cannon.
Right off the bat I was annoyed when apparently McKinley High School's football season goes on after December — the last episode was a holiday one! Oh, "Glee," why? And while I do wish for harmony in the McKinley High hallways, I also could understand why the football team was confused why they had to perform their own halftime show. I really could care less over the players' concerns about their reputations, but with the elaborate zombie costumes (I still don't really get it), I was questioning the amount of time this production would take. But what do I know!
But as I said, the football team was concerned about their reputation after the hockey team gave them a taste of their own Slushie-medicine (also if football is still going on, what month does hockey start at this school?). All the non-Glee Club football players refused to do the halftime show and were subsequently kicked off the team, leaving the girls of Glee to add themselves to the roster in order for there to be enough field players.
At the game, McKinley High was struggling, and soon as the rest of the football team realized what they were missing out, got all zombied out for the halftime show, a mash-up (Glee's favorite thing) of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Heads Will Roll." They were allowed to rejoin for the second half (and the girls could finally take their rightful place on the sidelines.... my women's studies minor loved that one) and won after a ridiculously contrived missed snap by the other team. Oh and Finn got Brittany, Quinn and Santana to quit the Cheerios and be there for halftime too (rant for another day — does Santana really like being in Glee Club? I'm not convinced). Did I expect anything less?
I hope my recap effectively highlights my many annoyances, but there were a couple moments I did actually enjoy as listed below:
-Brittany's reaction to the human cannon Sue wanted to shoot her from: "I don't want to die yet. At least not until 'One Tree Hill' gets canceled." This both made me laugh, and learn that OTH is still on the air — informative humor! But seriously, Brittany's one-liners showcase the fact that while I can't stand the show's shaky plots sometimes, the writing for one-liners can be really spot-on (also see Sue). I'm a sucker for a quotable line. Also a highlight - Sue's cheerleading parka. A perfect addition to any track suit.
-I love listening to talented people sing. While I felt that the cover of Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" could have been much stronger contextually (like, some real Finn-Rachel angst, not just like, a random Puck-Rachel choir room performance), I did love the Warblers' version of Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills." I like their Glee Club better and will probably root for them at regionals. And while I didn't understand the halftime show, I still liked it.
But really, why do I come back? Because after I spend an hour complaining, something like *spoiler alert* Quinn kissing Finn has to make me need to tune in again! It's like "Glee" knew I loved the episodes where Finn and Quinn were dating and he loved her, but he also liked Rachel — so much conflict, angst... so high school, unlike February football games. So moral of the story, I remain under the "Glee" spell for yet another day. "Glee" has another new episode on Tuesday so I beg you to come check back in for another mix of rants and highlights.
