one month (ein Monat)

I started this blog today because in exactly one month I will head off to Germany. I have to admit, this future (and expensive) endeavor still feels so surreal.

Ever since I began studying German, I’ve always imagined what it would be like to go to a German-speaking country and surround myself with native speakers. While I’m quite nervous about the equally challenging baggage that comes with studying abroad (five courses in German, as one unavoidable example), I’m thrilled more than anything else.

The trip to Freiburg (which, for the unfamiliar, is a small, environmentally-friendly town in the southwestern corner of the country, near the borders of France and Switzerland and known for its rich history, proximity to the Black Forest, and roots in medieval architecture) is going to be a loooong journey:

Three planes and two trains, my friends (I’m not sure how much energy I’ll have left by the end of it). My itinerary includes a plane from Denver to D.C., D.C. to Copenhagen, Copenhagen to Frankfurt and then two trains from Frankfurt that eventually bring me to to Freiburg (officially called Freiburg im Breisgau).

As of now, I’m spending most of my days budgeting and planning on what to bring, hoping that I don’t make too many mistakes already, pre-departure.

I’m sure this blog will liven up once I actually arrive in the country and begin making friends, speaking Deutsch, and visiting what the continent of Europe has to offer (which I’m pretty sure is quite a bit).

Bis bald,

Chris
