What Exactly IS Study Abroad?

"Study abroad" can be defined in any number of different ways. A really brief and informative summary of studying abroad can be found on the highly reputable (*wink*) Wikipedia website:

Who Am I? And What Do I Know About Studying Abroad?

I am not a study abroad coordinator, working in an office and handing out leaflets about study abroad programs to college students. I do not work for a travel magazine, jet-setting around the world to explore exotic locales and uncover the best restaurants, hotels, and tourist hotspots. I have never written a travel guide like Frommer's, Let's Go, or Lonely Planet. So who am I, and why am I qualified to write a blog about studying abroad?

I am a college student. To be exact - I am a junior journalism major at Ithaca College (IC) in Ithaca, NY.

Combatting racism

A few weeks ago I attended a Black History Month event entitled, "Black Man's Guide to Survival at SUNY Cortland" held by the student group Men of Value and Excellence (M.O.V.E.) and it was an eye-opening presentation.

Alcohol

I'm 19 years old and of legal drinking age in the great country of Australia. Being legal has its advantages: I can go into a bar (they're called "pubs" here) or liquor store (called "bottleshops") without getting any dirty looks; I can sit at the bar and cheer on my favorite Australian Rules Football team (the Freemantle Dockers look pretty good); I can order a nice merlot with my steak (haven't done that yet). Yep, easy access to alcohol is pretty nice.
